Privacy Policy
How RetireNerd collects, uses, and protects your information — including what happens when you sign up for our newsletter.
01 Privacy Policy
1. Overview
RetireNerd ("RetireNerd," "we," "us") publishes educational content about Social Security, Medicare, and 401(k)/IRA rules at retirenerd.com. This policy explains what information we collect when you visit this site or sign up for our newsletter, how we use it, and the choices you have. RetireNerd is an educational reference, not a financial advisory or brokerage service — we don't collect account numbers, balances, or other financial account data through this site.
2. Information We Collect
We collect information in two ways:
- Information you provide directly. If you sign up for our newsletter or follow an article series, we collect your email address (and, if the signup form asks for it, your first name). We don't require an account or password to use this site.
- Information collected automatically. Like most websites, our hosting provider and any analytics tools we use may automatically log standard technical data — IP address, browser type, device type, pages visited, and referring URL — for security and to understand how the site is used.
3. How We Use Your Information
We use the information above to:
- Send newsletters and article-series notifications to people who've opted in;
- Operate, maintain, and improve this site;
- Monitor for security issues and prevent abuse; and
- Understand, in aggregate, which pages and topics are useful to readers.
We do not use your information to make individualized financial, legal, or tax recommendations, and we do not sell your personal information.
4. Our Newsletter & Email Communications
From time to time, we send a newsletter with retirement-planning tips, rule changes, and updates about this site and Compass. Readers can also ask to be notified when a new article is published in a particular RetireNerd series. We only send these messages to addresses that requested them and completed any required confirmation.
Every newsletter or article-series notification includes a working unsubscribe link, and we honor unsubscribe requests promptly. We do not sell, rent, or trade your email address to third parties for their own marketing purposes. If we use a third-party email service provider to send these emails, that provider processes your email address only on our behalf, under its own privacy and security practices.
5. Cookies, Google Fonts & Analytics
This site may load Lato and Space Grotesk from Google Fonts' servers, depending on the site's selected typography. Loading a font this way sends your IP address and browser information to Google as part of that request, under Google's privacy policy.
If we add analytics (such as Google Analytics) or a cookie-based tool in the future, it may set cookies or similar technology in your browser to measure site usage. Where required by law, we'll ask for your consent before doing so and provide a way to opt out.
6. Third-Party Services
We may use third-party services to help run this site and our newsletter — for example, a web hosting provider, an email service provider, or an analytics tool. These providers only receive the information needed to perform their function (such as your email address, for sending the newsletter) and are contractually or by policy restricted from using it for their own purposes.
7. Data Retention & Security
We keep newsletter subscriber information for as long as you remain subscribed, plus a reasonable period afterward to honor unsubscribe requests and comply with anti-spam law. We use reasonable administrative and technical safeguards to protect the information we hold, but no method of storage or transmission over the internet is 100% secure, and we can't guarantee absolute security.
8. Your Rights & Choices
You can:
- Unsubscribe from the newsletter at any time using the link in any email we send;
- Ask us what personal information we hold about you, or ask us to correct or delete it, by contacting us (see below); and
- Decline to provide information — you can read every page on this site without signing up for anything.
Depending on where you live, you may have additional rights under laws like the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) or the EU/UK General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). Contact us and we'll do our best to accommodate applicable requests.
9. Children's Privacy
This site is intended for adults planning their own retirement and is not directed at children. We don't knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 13. If you believe a child has provided us information, contact us and we'll delete it.
10. Links to Other Websites
This site links to external resources (like ssa.gov, medicare.gov, and irs.gov) and to Compass tool. We aren't responsible for the privacy practices of sites we link to — review their policies separately.
11. Changes to This Policy
We may update this policy occasionally — for example, if we add a new email service provider or analytics tool. We'll update the "Last updated" date at the top of this page when we do. Material changes affecting how we use previously collected information will be communicated to newsletter subscribers by email.
