Does Medicare Cover Dental, Vision and Hearing?

Original Medicare covers some medically necessary services involving the mouth, eyes and ears, but it generally does not cover routine dental, routine vision or hearing aids.

Dental

Routine cleanings, fillings, extractions and dentures are generally not covered. Medicare may cover certain dental services closely connected to a covered procedure, such as some care before an organ transplant, cardiac valve procedure, dialysis treatment or cancer treatment. The connection must meet Medicare’s rules.

Vision

Routine eye exams for eyeglass prescriptions and ordinary glasses are generally not covered. Part B can cover certain exams and treatments related to diabetes, glaucoma risk, macular degeneration and cataract surgery. After cataract surgery with an implanted intraocular lens, Medicare may cover one pair of corrective lenses under its rules.

Hearing

Original Medicare generally does not cover hearing aids or exams solely to fit them. Part B may cover diagnostic hearing and balance exams ordered to determine whether medical treatment is needed.

Ways to fill the gaps

  • Compare the exact dental, vision and hearing limits in Medicare Advantage plans.
  • Price standalone dental or vision coverage against paying cash.
  • Ask providers about negotiated self-pay rates and payment plans.
  • Build a dedicated annual reserve for predictable care.
  • Check Medicaid, veteran benefits or community programs if eligible.
